Pokemon Art on the Square: August 5 and More.

FRI. AUG 5 Marietta Square Art Walk continues August 5th with a new adventure.  Art Walk visitors can “catch ‘em all” (Pokémon ART, that is) throughout the The Marietta Square. Artists will hide small Pokémon themed works throughout town for visitors to find and take home! We’ll post clues about their location on our Facebook page throughout the evening. Finders, Keepers!!! Downtown Kennesaw.  The race for adults and children benefits the Disabled American Veterans, United Military Care, KSU”s veterans scholarship fund, and help sponsor the City of Kennesaw’s Veterans Day luncheon. Same-day registration and packet pickup at Kennesaw First Baptist Church opens at 6:30 am; a one-mile fun run for children starts at 7:30 am with the 5K race beginning at 8 am. SAT AUG 6 – BOATING SAFETY CLASSES – The Acworth Parks and Recreation Department is proud to partner with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 22 to offer Boating Safety Classes at Roberts School Community Center from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  This is a NASBLA certified boating safety course.  This is an entry level class aimed at the inland boater. Celebrate the 4th on Marietta Square

fireworks2Grab your American flag, put on your red, white and blue, and celebrate America’s independence July 4, from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. with an Independence Day parade and celebration on the Square presented by Superior Plumbing, free live concerts, arts and crafts show, food, carnival games and the City of Marietta fireworks finale. Throughout the day, more than 80,000 people are expected to celebrate on the Square with great food, fun activities, the best arts and crafts around and free entertainment from Zach Seabaugh, a hometown boy who was a finalist on the hit television show The Voice. His popularity continues to flourish as he begins performing to growing audiences on bigger stages. Opening for Seabaugh is Presley Sullivan, a featured artist on 94.9 The Bull’s Backyard Country. Concerts are presented by 94.9 The Bull.

Parade
The Marietta Independence Day parade is scheduled to include more than 115 entries with more than 40 floats and approximately 2,000 participants. Entries include marching units from the City of Marietta, civic organizations, beauty queens, scouts and local businesses. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Roswell Street Baptist Church and travels west on Roswell Street, north on East Park Square past Glover Park and the Square, down Cherokee Street and ends at North Marietta Parkway.

Crafts, food and carnival
Visit the Arts and crafts show with nearly 100 unique handcrafted vendors: 10 a.m.-9 p.m.  Enjoy lunch or dinner, or just snacking at the Food concessions: Anything to please the palate from ice products to cool you down to corndogs and BBQ to satisfy your appetite. 10 a.m.-9 p.m.

The City of Marietta fireworks display is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. and will be shot from the First United Methodist Church parking lot. If bad weather is expected, the fireworks may begin a few minutes early, to ensure the entire display is completed. If you want to watch the fireworks, make sure you get there early to grab a spot because traffic is expected to be heavy.

Concert Tables: Concert tables are available for purchase in 8-tops and 6-tops for $100 and $80 respectively. Tables can be claimed beginning at 5:30 p.m. on the fourth and you can purchase one by calling 770.423.1330., or email Peter Jezerinac at pjezerinac@jrmmanagement.com.

Zach Seabaugh in Concert – July 4th

Seabaugh has been busy since his appearance on Season 9 of the hit NBC show The VOICE co-writing with Emmy winning song writer Bruce Burch and others to put together this EP of original music. mpdMON JUNE 20 CIVILIAN RESPONSE TO ACTIVE SHOOTER EVENT TRAINING. 6:30-8:00.  Hosted by the Marietta Police Dept at Marietta Performing Arts Center, MHS. The Marietta Police Department has presented the nationally recognized CRASE (Civilian Response to Active Shooter Event) training program several times to packed auditoriums in the last few months to metro Atlanta. While there is no known active threat to the Marietta community, the police department is aware of the continued want and need for preparedness training for the public in light of the recent attacks.

catchthewave1THUR JUNE 23 – ART, COKE, AND AMERICAN HISTORY LECTURE – 7:00pm at the Marietta History Museum. David Parker, professor of history, has been the Assistant Chair of the History Department at KSU since August 2009. He was an undergraduate at Duke University and went to graduate school at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill). Parker’s dissertation, on Georgia writer Bill Arp (real name, Charles Henry Smith), was published by the University of Georgia Press. He has also written a book, Carpet Capital, on the American carpet industry.  Recently, Parker has become interested in old textbooks as a research topic. He teaches classes at KSU in Georgia History, the History of American Religion, the Gilded Age, and Research Methods.

SMOKE ON THE LAKE BBQ FESTIVAL ~ MAY 6-7 2016

smokeThe Barbecue season kicks off the year with one of the first competitions in north Georgia. More than 30 teams will fill up Cauble Park in downtown Acworth on Friday May 6, from 6:00 p.m., to 10:00 p.m., and Saturday May 7, from 10:00 a.m., to 4:00 p.m. Admission to the festival is free and free parking can be found downtown with free shuttles running Friday night for the concert and fireworks and all day Saturday.

Teams will compete on Friday night to see who will be crowned the Lord of the Wings Champion. This is judged by patrons of the concert Friday night, so bring the whole family and make sure you are all hungry!

Visit the teams and taste all the BBQ you desire, as the Taster’s Choice award will also be decided by patrons of the event on Saturday morning at starting at 10:00 a.m.   Tickets to taste the backyard teams BBQ will be on sale for a nominal charge. Vote with your stomach early and often to crown the winner of a Primo Grill and the title of the 2016 People’s Choice Champion.

Activities for the kids will be in the Northwest Family YMCA Kids Zone and local entertainment fills the stage from 11:00 a.m., to 3:00 p.m., on Saturday with the awards given out at 4:00 p.m.

Marietta Square Art Walk continues Friday, May 6 from 5pm to 9pm. NATIONAL TRAIN DAY FOR AUTISM

autismtrainwill be held Saturday May 7. – The Southern Museum will host a National Train Day for Autism! The Museum will have several types of model train layouts for children of different ages and needs to tinker and play with, including wooden toy trains and remote controlled trains. There will also be in-depth circuitry workshops for those who want to learn to build their own train layouts at home. The Marietta Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce the 40th Annual May-retta Daze Arts and Crafts Festival held in Glover Park in the Historic Marietta Square will be held on May 7-8, 2016.
The festival draws artists and craftspeople from many Southern states, as well as local Georgia artists. In addition to a wide variety of arts and crafts items, the festival also includes children’s activities and free entertainment on the stage.

The show setting is at Glover Park in the historic Marietta Square. The Square is the home of many antique and specialty stores, excellent restaurants and interesting things to do.

LIGHT THE WAY 5K5k
The Kiwanis Club invites our community to participate in their Light the Way 5k on Sat. May 7 at 7:00 pm. Wear your glowing, flashing, sparkling, blinking running gear for this nighttime race!
Packet pickup and race-day registration begin near the track at Marietta High School at 6:00 p.m. This fun family event will kick off at 7:00 p.m. with a parade of entrants for all the participating Marietta City Schools.  The Star Spangled Banner will be at 7:25 p.m. followed by a FREE Tot Trot at 7:30 for ages 4 & Under.
The 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk will be held on the Marietta High school track at 7:35 – the fee is $20. The Light the Way 5K will begin at 8:00 p.m. and is a Peachtree Qualifier – the fee is $25. Put on your glow gear and join in the fun!  There will be music and fun for the whole family!

insideoutCome Meet the Little Voice Inside Your Head.  The City of Kennesaw is excited to announce the return of its free Outdoor Movie Series at Swift-Cantrell Park with Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out (rated PG). Arrive at 6 pm for pre-movie entertainment, giveaways, and outdoor fun. Moviegoers should bring a blanket or low-back chairs. Pop-up tents, canopies, or beach umbrellas that can obstruct the view of others are not permitted. Concessions will be available for purchase. Parking is available inside the park and at neighboring Kennesaw Elementary School.

Table reservations are taken on a first come basis (and will sell out quickly) on the first working day of each month beginning at 8:00 a.m. www.mariettaga.gov/concerts. Blankets and lawn chairs may be set up in the park. Personal tables and plastic ground coverings are not permitted in the park, however they may be set up on the street after 5:30 p.m. Bring a picnic dinner or dine in one of the many fine restaurants located on the square.

SAT APR 30 – NATIONAL DRUG TAKE BACK DAY – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Marietta Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public the opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Marietta Police Department at 240 Lemon St Marietta, Ga 30060.  (The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches.)  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.  This is also being hosted by the Kennesaw Police Department and Acworth Police Department at their respective stations.

SAT APR 30 – CLASSIC CAR CRUISE NIGHT –  The city of Acworth will host a Classic Car Cruise from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Main Street in Downtown Acworth.  The Lake City Cruisers partner with the city and the downtown Acworth merchants to hold these Classic Car Cruises. For this Sip n’ Stroll, we will stroll down the neighborhood streets of Whitlock Heights. Certified arborists and landscape architects will lead the tour of the neighborhood, pointing out the many treasures and challenges that exist among our valuable stock of trees. The experts will offer practical advice as to how we can extend the life of our mature trees and how we can plan for their eventual replacement. The experts will discuss overhead utilities, proper pruning, protecting root systems and selecting the right specimen for the right location.

Visitors are welcome to bring their own evening refreshments and MTK will provide water and light snacks.
