SMOKE ON THE LAKE BBQ FESTIVAL
PRESENTED MAY 12-13 2017

The Barbecue season kicks off the year with one of the first competitions in north Georgia. Over 30 teams will fill up Cauble Park in downtown Acworth on Friday May 12, from 5:00 p.m., to 10:00 p.m., and Saturday May 13, from 10:00 a.m., to 4:00 p.m. Admission to the festival is free and free parking can be found downtown with free shuttles running Friday night for the concert and fireworks and all day Saturday. Cauble Park and Lake Acworth has to be one of the most beautiful venues in our area – what better place to hold a family friendly backyard, BBQ competition.

You can smell the North Cobb Rotary Smoke on the Lake BBQ Festival from miles around.  This event is in its eighth year offering lots of cash and prizes for the BBQ competition, the Lord of the Wings and the People’s Choice.  Over 8,000 people are expected to visit!

The best Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band, Sons of Sailors takes the stage on Friday night at 8:00 p.m., for the LGE Community Credit Union Concert Under the Stars. All ages will enjoy this show as they will be playing all your favorite Parrot Head songs. Fireworks will finish the night – shot over beautiful Lake Acworth.  General Admission is free on Friday night and tables of six can be purchased for $100, price includes your table and six chairs for the whole crew. Inflatables will be in place for kids of all ages. Slide down a giant 24-foot inflatable slide, jump on a huge obstacle course, shoot hoops in the bouncy basketball jumpy and others. Face painting will be available as well.

Visit the beer and wine tent as adult beverages will be available for the concert Friday night and Saturday during the BBQ competition.
Lord of the Wings and People’s Choice Pork BBQ Competitions are judged by the Public

These two competitions have the largest direct impact on our community. The funds raised thru taster tickets sold to the public are used for multiple Rotary charity efforts. Your support is highly encouraged and needed – and it’s fun!

Lord of the Wings: Take part in the crowning of the Lord of the Wings Competition on Friday night as cook teams cook up their best recipe of the good old chicken wing!

People’s Choice Award: Come enjoy barbecue you can’t buy at any old store and help us decide who makes the best backyard BBQ Pork around. For a nominal charge you can purchase tastes of all the backyard teams competing in the competition all day on Saturday.
Admission:    Parking downtown, shuttles and event admission are all FREE.

MEET LEO MAZZONE On April 13 in Acworth

Greg Carter, Manager of Gabriels Old Mill in Acworth, invites the public to a meet and greet for Leo Mazzone on Thursday, April 13 at 4:00 pm..  Mazzone was the pitching coach for the Braves during the time of Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, and Greg Maddox.  He has been heralded by Sports Illustrated as the greatest assistant coach.  Leo will be signing autographs and wants folks to know that a small donation to the Companion Animal Connection (Waleska, GA) would be deeply appreciated.

Celebrate the 4th on Marietta Square

fireworks2Grab your American flag, put on your red, white and blue, and celebrate America’s independence July 4, from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. with an Independence Day parade and celebration on the Square presented by Superior Plumbing, free live concerts, arts and crafts show, food, carnival games and the City of Marietta fireworks finale. Throughout the day, more than 80,000 people are expected to celebrate on the Square with great food, fun activities, the best arts and crafts around and free entertainment from Zach Seabaugh, a hometown boy who was a finalist on the hit television show The Voice. His popularity continues to flourish as he begins performing to growing audiences on bigger stages. Opening for Seabaugh is Presley Sullivan, a featured artist on 94.9 The Bull’s Backyard Country. Concerts are presented by 94.9 The Bull.

Parade
The Marietta Independence Day parade is scheduled to include more than 115 entries with more than 40 floats and approximately 2,000 participants. Entries include marching units from the City of Marietta, civic organizations, beauty queens, scouts and local businesses. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Roswell Street Baptist Church and travels west on Roswell Street, north on East Park Square past Glover Park and the Square, down Cherokee Street and ends at North Marietta Parkway.

Crafts, food and carnival
Visit the Arts and crafts show with nearly 100 unique handcrafted vendors: 10 a.m.-9 p.m.  Enjoy lunch or dinner, or just snacking at the Food concessions: Anything to please the palate from ice products to cool you down to corndogs and BBQ to satisfy your appetite. 10 a.m.-9 p.m.

The City of Marietta fireworks display is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. and will be shot from the First United Methodist Church parking lot. If bad weather is expected, the fireworks may begin a few minutes early, to ensure the entire display is completed. If you want to watch the fireworks, make sure you get there early to grab a spot because traffic is expected to be heavy.

Zach Seabaugh in Concert – July 4th

Seabaugh has been busy since his appearance on Season 9 of the hit NBC show The VOICE co-writing with Emmy winning song writer Bruce Burch and others to put together this EP of original music. He played the songs for the first time to a packed house at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, GA and received great reviews. fireworks1Superior Plumbing is presenting the event which kicks off with a free concert and fireworks in conjunction with the Acworth Business Association and the City of Acworth on Friday May 6, The Mustangs will delight everyone, playing your country favorites on the CobbEMC Concert Stage at 8:00 p.m., presented by Day’s Chevrolet. Fireworks will shoot high in to the sky following the concert, so bring the whole family for a night you won’t soon forget! Reserved tables that seat six can be purchased for $100. Teams will compete on Friday night to see who will be crowned the Lord of the Wings Champion. This is judged by patrons of the concert Friday night, so bring the whole family and make sure you are all hungry!

Visit the teams and taste all the BBQ you desire, as the Taster’s Choice award will also be decided by patrons of the event on Saturday morning at starting at 10:00 a.m.   Tickets to taste the backyard teams BBQ will be on sale for a nominal charge. Vote with your stomach early and often to crown the winner of a Primo Grill and the title of the 2016 People’s Choice Champion.

Activities for the kids will be in the Northwest Family YMCA Kids Zone and local entertainment fills the stage from 11:00 a.m., to 3:00 p.m., on Saturday with the awards given out at 4:00 p.m.

The Smoke on the Lake BBQ Festival is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Rotary Club of North Cobb as proceeds of the event go to the charities of the North Cobb Rotary Club, including the Acworth Special Needs Field, End Polio Now, Mountain Top Boys Home, The Men’s Extension, The Women’s Extension, MUST Ministries, Cobb Christmas, local Cobb schools and more.  For information visit www.smokeonthelake.org and follow us on facebook.

Marietta Square Art Walk continues Friday, May 6 from 5pm to 9pm. Art Walk celebrates the vitality of Marietta’s diverse cultural Arts scene with artists, businesses, and organizations representing all the Arts.  The evening comes alive as performance, dance, culinary and visual Art permeate every corner of the charming Historic Marietta Square.

NATIONAL TRAIN DAY FOR AUTISM

autismtrainwill be held Saturday May 7. – The Southern Museum will host a National Train Day for Autism! The Museum will have several types of model train layouts for children of different ages and needs to tinker and play with, including wooden toy trains and remote controlled trains. There will also be in-depth circuitry workshops for those who want to learn to build their own train layouts at home. The Marietta Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce the 40th Annual May-retta Daze Arts and Crafts Festival held in Glover Park in the Historic Marietta Square will be held on May 7-8, 2016.
The festival draws artists and craftspeople from many Southern states, as well as local Georgia artists. In addition to a wide variety of arts and crafts items, the festival also includes children’s activities and free entertainment on the stage.

The show setting is at Glover Park in the historic Marietta Square. The Square is the home of many antique and specialty stores, excellent restaurants and interesting things to do.

LIGHT THE WAY 5K5k
The Kiwanis Club invites our community to participate in their Light the Way 5k on Sat. May 7 at 7:00 pm. Wear your glowing, flashing, sparkling, blinking running gear for this nighttime race!
Packet pickup and race-day registration begin near the track at Marietta High School at 6:00 p.m. This fun family event will kick off at 7:00 p.m. with a parade of entrants for all the participating Marietta City Schools.  The Star Spangled Banner will be at 7:25 p.m. followed by a FREE Tot Trot at 7:30 for ages 4 & Under.
The 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk will be held on the Marietta High school track at 7:35 – the fee is $20. The Light the Way 5K will begin at 8:00 p.m. and is a Peachtree Qualifier – the fee is $25. Put on your glow gear and join in the fun!  There will be music and fun for the whole family!

KENNESAW’S OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT – SAT MAY 7 –

insideoutCome Meet the Little Voice Inside Your Head.  The City of Kennesaw is excited to announce the return of its free Outdoor Movie Series at Swift-Cantrell Park with Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out (rated PG). Arrive at 6 pm for pre-movie entertainment, giveaways, and outdoor fun. Moviegoers should bring a blanket or low-back chairs. Pop-up tents, canopies, or beach umbrellas that can obstruct the view of others are not permitted. Concessions will be available for purchase. Parking is available inside the park and at neighboring Kennesaw Elementary School.

The market is located in Historic Downtown Acworth in the Acworth First Baptist Church Parking Lot on the north end of Main Street. Market customers will have a wide variety of garden ripe Georgia grown vegetables, eggs, cheese, bedding plants, fresh baked bread, pies, cakes, honey and jams to choose from each week. This year’s market will be bigger and better than previous years and shoppers won’t believe the selection of home grown goodies! The market is located in Historic Downtown Acworth in the Acworth First Baptist Church Parking Lot on the north end of Main Street.

concertFRI APR 29 GLOVER PARK CONCERT SERIES 8:00 pm.  This season’s series kicks off with Still Swinging, Big Band music.  The event is free, however tables are available to rent. Table reservations are taken on a first come basis (and will sell out quickly) on the first working day of each month beginning at 8:00 a.m. www.mariettaga.gov/concerts. Blankets and lawn chairs may be set up in the park. Personal tables and plastic ground coverings are not permitted in the park, however they may be set up on the street after 5:30 p.m. Bring a picnic dinner or dine in one of the many fine restaurants located on the square.

SAT APR 30 – NATIONAL DRUG TAKE BACK DAY – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Marietta Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public the opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Marietta Police Department at 240 Lemon St Marietta, Ga 30060.  (The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches.)  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.  This is also being hosted by the Kennesaw Police Department and Acworth Police Department at their respective stations.

SAT APR 30 – AGING BY DESIGN SUMMIT AND EXPO – 9am-2pm at Roswell Street Baptist Church. Featuring keynote speakers, Coach Vince and Barbara Dooley. Free health screening from 10am-2pm. Early registration at any Cobb County Senior Center is $5 until Friday April 22nd. After deadline is $10 per person.

SOLD OUT!! SAT APR 30 Georgia Symphony Orchestra 8:00 pm.  The final concert of the Georgia Symphony Orchestra’s 65th Anniversary Season will be a presentation of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Guest conductor Duilio Dobrin is the third and final candidate in the organization’s search for its new music director. SAT APR 30 – CLASSIC CAR CRUISE NIGHT –  The city of Acworth will host a Classic Car Cruise from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Main Street in Downtown Acworth.  The Lake City Cruisers partner with the city and the downtown Acworth merchants to hold these Classic Car Cruises. The event is free to the public. A $2 entry fee is requested for all vehicles in the cruise.  All proceeds go to the Horizon Field, an all-inclusive special needs sports facility in Acworth. SAT APR 30 – COMPLIMENTARY MOVIE FOR MILITARY FAMILIES – The Think Melissa Team is honored to help celebrate our current and past military families with a COMPLIMENTARY movie event, in honor of April being the Month of the Military Child.
