Fun Things to Do This Weekend.

Tired of our dreary, raining, windy weather — get out of the house and enjoy some of the events available to us in Acworth, Kennesaw and Marietta.  See listings below.  Many are free.  Spring is just around the corner.

FRI, FEB 7 “Martinis & Music” (5:30-8:30pm) at the Cobb-Marietta Museum of Art. Martinis & Music will feature the Big Band sound of Douglas Cameron. They will serve light hors d’oeuvres and have a cash bar. Free to members, $8 for guests. Memberships will be available at the door.
 
FRI, FEB 7 ” 2 Rules Fine Art Opening reception for “A Sense of Place,” (6-9pm) a solo exhibition of landscapes by Paul LaJeunesse. LaJeunesse is a realist landscape artist. Many of the landscapes in this show are scenes of Iceland rendered in stark black and white that were completed by LaJeunesse while in Iceland on a Fulbright grant. His more recent works reflect a collage approach, pulling various spaces together into a singular dramatic new space. LaJeunesse currently lives in Atlanta and teaches painting and drawing at Georgia State University. The show runs Jan 31-March 1. Regular gallery hours are Wed-Sat 11am-6pm. FRI, FEB 7   “Citizen Kane” (8pm) at Earl Smith Strand Theatre Orson Welles’ cinematic masterpiece returns to the silver screen! Orson Welles’ first feature film — which he directed, produced, and co-wrote, as well as playing the title role — proved to be his most important and influential work, a ground-breaking drama loosely based on the life of William Randolph Hearst which is frequently cited as the finest American film ever made. Tickets are $8 for adults, and $7 for seniors, students, and military. Show begins at 8PM. Live organ pre-show begins at 7:30.

FRI FEB 7 Scout Shabbat On February 7 at 7pm, Reform Jewish Congregation Ner Tamid will again be having a Scout Shabbat, led by Rabbi Thomas P. Liebschutz, celebrating Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from our congregation and surrounding areas. Services will be held at Cheatham Hill Community Center, 3702 Earnest Barrett Pkwy, Marietta. Boy & Girl Scouts and Scouters (BSA adult volunteers) attending this service in uniform will receive a special patch.  Scouts of all faiths are welcome.

SAT FEB 8 Tree Planting at Whitaker Park Marietta Tree Keepers invites volunteers of all ages to help plant trees at the Whitaker Park on Saturday, February 8th.  8:30am Sign-in and refreshments.  9:00-11am Plant trees.  Tools and refreshments provided. Dress for outdoor weather. Whitaker Park is located at  1540 Holcomb Lake Road, Marietta, GA 30062  (located off  Scufflegrit Road, south of Sandy Plains Rd.

SAT, FEB 8  “Marietta Jazz, Jokes and Art Series” – TRIBUTE SHOW TO MARCUS MILLER (7pm) at 164 Roswell St NE on the Square.    Pick up dinner or appetizers at one of the local Square restaurants and your favorite bottle of wine from the Marietta Wine Market on the square and enjoy this special evening of live jazz, comedy and art.  Doors open at 7:00pm for the Artist Market; Live Jazz and Comedy starts at 8:00pm Location:  164 Roswell St NE, Marietta Ga 30064 (On the Square, next to the Starlight Cafe) Free parking around the square and in the parking garage adjacent to the Strand Theatre. SAT FEB 8 KENNESAW’S FAMILY VALENTINE DANCE -6-9 pm. SAT, FEB 8   “Godfather ” (8pm) at Earl Smith Strand Theatre The 1972 three-time Academy Award winning mob-drama that spawned two sequels and countless Marlon Brando impressions comes to The Strand’s big screen. Live organ pops variety show and sing-along featuring The Strand’s Mighty Allen Theatre Organ at 7:30 PM Tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for students, seniors, and military.

SUN, FEB 9 Marietta’s Daddy Daughter Dance 2:30-5 p.m. The City of Marietta’s Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting its Annual Daddy Daughter Dance on Sunday, February 9th from 2:30-5 p.m. at the Mansour Center located at 995 Roswell Street.This year’s Dance theme will be “Ahoy Mates!” and the deadline for fathers and their daughters between the ages of 5-12 to sign up is February 6th or when the first 100 daddy daughter duos have registered.Registration is available at www.mariettaga.gov  and tickets are $30 for couples and an additional $5 for daughters of the same father.
