FRI-SAT June 7-9 Marietta Museum of History Dixie Yard Sale. Be sure to swing by the Marietta Museum of History’s spot to check out the unique items we have. Due to the Museum’s schedule our yard sale will be open 10am till 4pm, Thursday June 6th – Saturday June 8th. There will be antiques, home décor, vintage items and more, including tips on how to repurpose items with ideas from Pinterest!  On Friday June 7th from 5-9pm, the Museum’s yard sale will continue as part of Art Walk on the Marietta Square, with “one man’s trash is another man’s art.” Abbie Parks, author of the book, ‘North Georgia’s Dixie Highway’, will also join us for Art Walk to sign copies of her book. FRI. JUNE 7 – FIRST FRIDAY ART WALK 5pm-9pm First Friday Art Walk is a free, self-guided tour to Marietta’s diverse art scene.  Art galleries, museums, cultural venues, restaurants and boutiques host artists within their stores and are open 5pm-9pm. 2013 dates are: June 7, July 5, August 2, September 6 & October 4.  

Stop by Marietta Wine Market, the Marietta Trolley Company, the Earl Smith Strand Theatre or the Cobb-Marietta Museum of Art to register for your chance to win a “Hip to be Square”  $50 gift certificate redeemable at any participating merchant on the Square. There will also be performance artists based throughout the Square.  New this year is Tavern in the Garten, a beer and wine garden where you can enjoy beverages, music and sponsor vendors.  

Local artists Jenny King, Jenny Lathem, Carrie Ellington, Lisa Rosenthal and Donna Shiver will be continue contributing their respective works throughout the season, June’s show will feature the next step in unlocking The Human Touch. The unique and colorful art work is reason enough to come visit the personable gallery and working studio that is tucked above the Australian Bakery and overlooks the historic Marietta Square. First Friday Art Walk is creating an art community of excellence on the Historic Marietta Square. Art Walk is a free self-guided tour of the Marietta Square’s eclectic art scene. Galleries, museums, cultural venues, restaurants and boutiques host artists within their businesses from 5pm to 9pm on the first Friday of every month, rain or shine. FRI JUNE 7   First Friday at Avery Gallery (5pm-9pm)Avery Gallery is excited to have a selection of glass artisans for June’s ArtWalk. They each have different styles, colors, and techniques to produce fantastic glass art. From stained & blown to etched & slumped, these artists develop masterpieces on a daily basis. Artists include Doug & Pam Mayer, Matt Janke, Charles Offutt, Jeff Loose, and Yuka Tadokoro. FRI-SUN June 7-9, Dixie Yard Sale, Ringgold to Marietta, GA – The Dixie Highway Yard Sale is an annual event held on the first full weekend of June. Dixie Highway is 90 miles of yard sales with all sorts of different vendors. It was created in 2006 to celebrate historic communities along the Dixie Highway. Starting in Ringgold, GA and ending in Marietta, GA there is everything from antiques, souvenirs, and nik-naks to classic attractions, food, events and more.

SAT JUN  8 Memorial Program Will Celebrate the Life of Councilman Thrash. 11:00 AM.  In lieu of a funeral, Bill Thrash’s family and the Mayor and Council extend an invitation to a memorial service on Saturday, June 8 at 11 a.m. at Kennesaw Mountain High School.  This program will be followed by a picnic lunch at Swift-Cantrell Park.  The public is welcomed to attend and share their memories and stories of Councilman Thrash.

SAMSUNGSAT JUNE 8 10th Annual Soap Box Derby Race 8:30 AM.
The Marietta Soap Box Derby Race, sponsored by the Marietta Kiwanis Club, will be held June 8th in the parking lot at Marietta High School starting at 8:30 AM.  It’s a great outing for the family and admission is Free! Youth ages 7-17 years of age will come from all over North Georgia to Marietta to participate in the All American Soap Box Derby local qualifying.  They will race their Derby Cars down a 500-foot hill at speeds reaching 25-30 mph to earn the title of All American Soap Box Derby-Marietta Local Champion.  The winners of each division will also earn a spot to represent Cobb County and the State of Georgia in the Annual All American Soap Box Derby World Championship Race in Akron, Ohio in July 2013, where they will race against more than 500 local Champions from all over the world including Germany, China, Japan and Austria.  For more information go to www.mariettasoapboxderby.com.  Yes, and girls race too.

SAT JUNE 8 MARIETTA ARTIST MARKET 9-2 The Marietta Square Artists Market is each 2nd and 4th Saturday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, conveniently located on Mill Street just across from the Farmer’s Market. SAT JUNE 8 Daylily Show and Plant Sale 12:30 PM
The Greater Atlanta and Cobb County Daylily Societies will host the Ninth Annual Daylily Show and Plant Sale on Saturday June 8th at the Cobb Galleria Center.  More than 500 blooms of several hundred different cultivars will be on display for morning judging and afternoon viewing by the public.  At the same time, bareroot daylilies will be on sale at bargain prices, a great way to add these hardy plants to a garden.  Experts from both clubs will be on hand to share what they know and love.  The show and sale is free and open to the public from 12:30 to 4:00 PM.  

SAT June 8 – Cherokee Experiences During the Civil War 2:00 pm. The Kennesaw Historical Society and the Southern Museum are sponsoring a lecture entitled “Cherokee Experiences During the Civil War”, with Alice Taylor-Colbert, Ph.D. The program will start at 2:00, and will be in the Kennesaw Depot. It is free to the public. Parking is available behind the Museum if the Depot lot is full.
