GREAT LOCOMOTIVE CHASE – SEP 6

runnerThe Kennesaw Museum Foundation is lacing up its running shoes and sprinting towards the 6th Annual Great Locomotive Chase 5K.

This year’s event, to be held Sept. 6 in downtown Kennesaw, coincides with the Taste of Kennesaw. All proceeds from the 5K support the educational and outreach programs of the Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History.

Runners may register at the Southern Museum, at any Big Peach Running Co. store or online at active.com or greatlocomotiverace.com.

Registration is $25 for the 5K and $15 for the 1-Mile Fun Run until August 26. Late registration, (postmarked after Aug 26) is $30 or $35 for runners that register on the day of the race. The corresponding Tot Trot is free. Runners who register the day of race are not guaranteed a race shirt.

The starting line for the 5K will be located in front of the Kennesaw First Baptist Church. Race Schedule: 7:30AM 1 Mile Fun Run /8:00AM 5k /8:55AM Tot Trot /9:15AM Awards Ceremony. The race takes place on the relatively flat, shady race route, runners will head north on Main Street to Swift-Cantrell Park, loop through the park, continue toward downtown Kennesaw and finish near the intersection of Main and Cherokee streets. This certified course is professionally timed.

Following the race, awards will be presented to the top three in all age groups, as well as a cash prize to top male and female racers.

Taste of Kennesaw – Sat. Sept 6

Taste of Kennesaw logoWho doesn’t like to eat?

The Kennesaw Business Association and the City of Kennesaw invite you and your family to sample more than 30 local restaurants from the Kennesaw and Cobb County area.    This is a great way to sample all your favorite restaurants again and again! Come out on Saturday, September 6th from 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM in downtown Kennesaw.

Admission is FREE and samples may be purchased from 1 dollar up to 4 dollars.  We are expecting more than 30 restaurants including The Melting Pot, Wing Stop, Williamson Bros. BBQ, Bruster’s Ice Cream, Big Shanty Smokehouse, Sandra’s Southern Tradition, Twisted Kitchen, Guston’s, Capo’s NY Pizza, Henrys, Zaxby’s, Marietta Fish Market, Copelands, Trackside Grill, Dogwood Terrace, 540 Kitchen & Social House, Mellow Mushroom, Carrabba’s & California Dreaming and more to tempt your taste buds and fill your senses.  Water and soft drinks will be sold by the North Cobb Warriors and the Kennesaw Mountain High School Mustangs.  Bring a canned good or two for the Shiloh UMC Food Pantry — their shelves are looking a bit bare.

The Main Street entertainment stage will have local entertainment all day and culminate with a concert at 6:00 p.m by The Mustangs.  Spend the last days of summer, listening to the sounds of music, and enjoying dinner with friends, neighbors and family.    The Taste of Kennesaw California Dreaming beer garden  will be under a huge tent with plenty of seating to sit back and wash down the delicious samples of food with an ice cold brew! It will also feature acoustic sounds of Scott Thompson from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

An enormous Kids Zone with interactive inflatables featuring the 33’ Shark Slide, Euro Bungee Quad Jump, 24’ Rockwall, 120’ Roller Coaster Obstacle Course, and much more will rise in two places at the Festival — on Main Street and at the Depot.

Check out the Depot Stage as four local high school seniors will compete in the Carrabba’s Culinary Cook-off at the Taste of Kennesaw for a $3,000 scholarship to the culinary school of choice.   The first two will go head to head from 10:30 a.m. – Noon and the second two from 12:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The Taste of Kennesaw will benefit five local charities: Shop with a Mustang (Kennesaw Mountain High School); Shop with a Warrior (North Cobb High School); Shop with a Longhorn (Kell High School); MUST Ministries  and the Jerry Worthan Community Christmas Fund

The Youth Museum’s Fundraiser – Sept 6.

AUCTION ItemsThe Youth Museum is holding its Twelfth Annual BBQ and Silent Auction on Saturday, September 6, 2014, 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM, celebrating over 44 years of serving students in Cobb County and the metro area. Delicious BBQ by Sam Huff’s BBQ-1, live music by Old Mill Road Band, tours of the Museum’s current exhibit, “America’s Pathways to Independence” and a fabulous Silent Auction will be the highlights of the evening. Sam Heaton, Director of Cobb County Department of Public Safety, will be the emcee.
