Trains, Trains, Trains – January 28 and 29!

dsc02702trainsWhether you are a lifelong model train enthusiast or you don’t know your O-gauge from your N-scale, model trains are for everyone! Come to the Trains, Trains, Trains event at the Southern Museum to see the best collection of model and modular train layouts in the area! The seventh-annual installment of Trains, Trains, Trains will be held on Saturday, January 28 and Sunday, January 29 from 9:30am to 5:00pm both days.

Come to the Southern Museum in Kennesaw, to enjoy the nostalgia and classic joy of model trains. Children of all ages will be fascinated by all things “choo-choo” so attend and share this great pastime with the younger generations. There will be a variety of model scales represented at the event, set up by hobby groups from around the Southeast. The Chattanooga Modular Modelers will bring an N-scale model with details so tiny you can’t even imagine how they make it work. The Georgia Garden Railway Society will set up their Garden scale layout, a returning favorite with a camera on the front to get a trains-eye view of the children watching.

Trains, Trains, Trains 2017 will bring back some of last year’s favorite bluegrass musicians, an expanded General Emporium gift shop with new shirts and toys, and several interactive layouts for kids of all ages to enjoy!

Museum admission for the event is $7.50 for adults, $6.50 for seniors, $5.50 for children ages 4-12, and free for children three and under as well as Museum members. bookcddvdswap_kidsKennesaw Parks & Recreation’s is hosting its popular Book, CD & DVD Swap at the Ben Robertson Community Center, 2753 Watts Drive, on Saturday, January 28 from 8 to 11 a.m.

You still have time to  drop off gently used hardcover or paperback books, music CDs and DVD movies  Friday, January 27 from 12 to 8 p.m. and receive a ticket redeemable for the same number of items during “open swap” time on Saturday, January 28.

Books must have their front and back covers intact and be in good condition. CDs and DVDs must be in their original cases and fully operable. Magazines, software, record albums, VHS or cassette tapes, adult content, unauthorized or illegal material will not be accepted.

After the event, all unclaimed items will be donated to charitable organizations.

This is not a book sale. It is a FREE media swap. Items will not be available for purchase.

With all the financial cutbacks, we are seeing more and more of our Service Members and Families struggling to make ends meet. Now more than ever we are really relying on volunteers and your kind donations. The Christmas Assistance Program is designed to be a supplemental program for Service Members that are struggling financially (due to unemployment, underemployment, illness, wounded or a single parent, etc.) and are not able to provide for their children. Those in need may be deployed, have recently returned from overseas, are classified as a wounded warrior or are a traditional National Guardsman.

Taste of Acworth – October 15 10-6

tasteacworthSuperior Plumbing LogoThe Superior Plumbing Taste of Acworth will take place in the Historic District on Main Street, Saturday, October 15th from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.  Acworth Business Association and the City of Acworth sponsor this coveted event every year that benefits numerous local schools and charities in our community.  Approximately 20,000 visitors tasted their way through this collection of delicacies last year and it is expected to evolve tremendously this year.

jdbbqThe festivities will showcase 150 booths from local restaurants and businesses that demonstrate what they do best.  There will be a local entertainment stage, complete with a dog show which begins at 3:30 pm,, children’s activities, lots of food, and more!

Don’t miss the Taste of Acworth, Carrabbas Culinary Competition where teams of three or four students, representing North Paulding High School, North Cobb High School and Kell High School will be competing for cash prizes.  Judging will take place at 12:40pm and all prize money will be awarded immediately following. There is a total of $2000 in prize money.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard has two different areas for Team Members to work in, each providing an important service to our guest.

The Hot Line Team Members work to ensure the proper preparation, assembly and delivery of food items.

Family Fun Events – Oct 6-10

chalktoberfestSAT-SUN OCT 8-9 CHALKTOBERFEST – on the Square in Marietta.  Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art  presents its annual Chalktoberfest that takes place around the Marietta Square and down Atlanta Street to the museum. This year, the Chalktoberfest theme is “Old Masters” and will feature over 80 contracted, professional chalk artists from around the US, Mexico and Canada. Artists will draw in front of spectators during both dates from 10a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to MCMA is free for the duration of the festival.
On Saturday, Oct. 8th, Chalktoberfest includes their annual Craft Beer Festival in conjunction with the Chalk Festival.  This Craft Beer Festival allows visitors to walk around and enjoy the Chalk Art while drinking samples. Chalktoberfest will feature an after hours concert in the Park with live music by A1A the Jimmy Buffet Tribute Band starting at 6:00pm.  Check the Chalktoberfest Website for the purchase of concert tables.
On Sunday, Oct. 9th, Chalktoberfest will bring in their Creative Kids craft-making section 1:00pm – 5:00pm, geared toward children of all ages – and host their non-professional Chalk Competition with Youth, Teen, School, and Adult Divisions.  Competition starts at 10:00am.  Winners announced at 3:00pm.  The Professional Chalk area will be available to view until 8:00pm Sunday night.

THU-SUN OCT 6-16 – “HAMLET” – at Theatre in the Square, Marietta. The show, directed by Emil Thomas, is set in a contemporary world.‘I am excited to be bringing a contemporary version of Hamlet to Marietta,’ says Thomas. ‘I think it will put a new twist on the play and really entertain’. FRI-SAT OCT 7-8 – ALLATOONA BOOK FESTIVAL – Award-winning author Janisse Ray will keynote the Allatoona Book Festival at the Roberts Community Center in Acworth which will include speakers, panels and workshops featuring area authors specializing in a variety of genres. Saturday includes a full day of workshops, panels and speakers starting at 8:30 a.m. with breakfast hosted by Acworth Tourism. The event is sponsored by the Acworth Cultural Arts Center. It is free and open to the public.

Join us for a high-energy, non-stop hour of fun recalling the great hits of the past featuring the 24 talented singers, dancers, and actors of CCCEPA’s premier musical theatre troupe, ComPAny 2017. In addition to a whole section of jazz standards, this year’s show features many of your favorite pop songs from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. SAT OCT 8 – TIM CRUNK MEMORIAL 5K – The event starts at 8AM with a 1 Mile Fun Run for Kids beginning at 9AM. Registration begins at 7AM.  The course is spread out around Cedarcrest Church and includes running through neighborhoods bordering Lake Allatoona. Funds raised are used to provide schools and educators with the training, supplies, and support they need to create a successful environment for hundreds of students around Haiti.

SAT OCT 8 – MARIETTA TREE KEEPERS DAY – Calling for volunteers of all ages to come out and assist as we maintain Hill Park. Hill Park is a pretty little pocket park that was transformed from a once vacant lot just a few blocks off the northeast corner of Historic Marietta Square. Please arrive by 8:30am. SAT OCT 8 – NCHS ORCHESTRA YARD SALE – 8:00 am-2:00 pm – North Cobb HS Cafeteria. Come out and support the North Cobb Orchestra. All proceeds from this event will help offset the cost of the Chamber Orchestra’s invitation to the Music for All Orchestra America Festival in Indianapolis, in March

SAT-SUN OCT 8-9 CHALKTOBERFEST – on the Square in Marietta.  Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art  presents its annual Chalktoberfest that takes place around the Marietta Square and down Atlanta Street to the museum. This year, the Chalktoberfest theme is “Old Masters” and will feature over 80 contracted, professional chalk artists from around the US, Mexico and Canada. Artists will draw in front of spectators during both dates from 10a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to MCMA is free for the duration of the festival.
On Saturday, Oct. 8th, Chalktoberfest includes their annual Craft Beer Festival in conjunction with the Chalk Festival.  This Craft Beer Festival allows visitors to walk around and enjoy the Chalk Art while drinking samples. Chalktoberfest will feature an after hours concert in the Park with live music by A1A the Jimmy Buffet Tribute Band starting at 6:00pm.  Check the Chalktoberfest Website for the purchase of concert tables.
On Sunday, Oct. 9th, Chalktoberfest will bring in their Creative Kids craft-making section 1:00pm – 5:00pm, geared toward children of all ages – and host their non-professional Chalk Competition with Youth, Teen, School, and Adult Divisions.  Competition starts at 10:00am.  Winners announced at 3:00pm.  The Professional Chalk area will be available to view until 8:00pm Sunday night.
