Free Book, CD & DVD Swap Returns on January 9

Book CD DVD SwapKennesaw Parks & Recreation’s annual Book, CD, and DVD Swap returns on Saturday, January 9 to the Ben Robertson Community Center, 2753 Watts Drive.

Drop off your gently used hardcover or paperback books, music CDs and DVD movies on Thursday and Friday, January 7-8 from noon to 8 pm and receive a ticket redeemable for the same number of items during “open swap” time on Saturday from 8-11 am.

Books must have their front and back covers intact and be in good condition. CDs and DVDs must be in their original cases and fully operable. Magazines, software, record albums, VHS or cassette tapes, adult content, unauthorized or illegal material will not be accepted. After the event, all unclaimed items will be donated to charitable organizations.

This is not a book sale. It is a FREE media swap. Items will not be available for purchase.

Assistance is needed during the event with receiving, sorting, counting and bagging items. Volunteers must have the ability to bend, stoop, stand and lift up to 20lbs.

Paul’s Pot Pies Grand Opening

An Evening with Navy SEAL Senior Chief Rob O’Neill

Hearts for Heroes will host an evening with Navy SEAL Senior Chief Rob O’Neill on Saturday, August 15th, 7:00 pm at the Marietta Performing Arts Center at Marietta High School, 1171 Whitlock Ave., Marietta, 30064.

Rob ONeillRob was Team Leader of “SEAL Team 6” on the raid when they caught Osama Ben Laden. He is also one of the most highly-decorated combat veterans (i.e., 2 “Silver Stars” and 4 “Bronze Stars with Valor”) alive, with over 400 combat  missions across 4 theaters of war! In addition, he was recently chosen as a “FOX NEWS Military Contributor”. His talk will be on: “Never Quit: The Story of a Life Built on Successful Missions”.

Tickets are $45 for General Admission; $35 – Active Military/Veteran General Admission. VIP Admission and After Party Tickets: $145; Active Military/Veteran VIP Admission and After Party  $100.

A Strand Musical Revue
The Strand is celebrating its fifth annual Motown musical revue with fan favorite The Motown Sound in July 2015! With each passing year, the praise for the Motown revue grows, making each year a bigger smash hit that the last. SAT & SUN – MARIETTA FARMER’S MARKET. Takes up residence on North Park Square on Saturday and opens 9-12. And on Sundays on Mill Street starting at noon. Market customers have lots of variety to choose from including heirloom tomatoes, fruits and vegetables that are rarely, available from the grocery store. Plus lots of the staples such as potatoes, onions, tomatoes, squash, beans, amazing cut flower arrangements, local honey, herbal soaps, whole grain breads, fudge pies, jelly, jam and preserves.

150th Anniversary the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain – June 27-29

Battlefield datesThe National Park Service announces the details of the upcoming commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park will offer three days of commemorative programs, battlefield tours, and living history demonstrations at sites throughout the park from June 26–29, 2014.

June 27, 2014, marks 150 years since Union Major General William T. Sherman launched his frontal assault at Kennesaw Mountain against the Confederate Army of Tennessee, led by General Joseph E. Johnston. The battle was a tactical defeat for the Union army, and was General Sherman’s last frontal assault of the Atlanta Campaign..

Evening programs will be available every night during the commemoration.  On Friday June 27 at 7:30 p.m. popular musical historian and composer, Bobby Horton, will open for Claire Lynch, Female Vocalist of the Year from the International Bluegrass Music Association.  On Saturday June 28 at 8:30 p.m. the park will rededicate the Illinois Monument at Cheatham Hill; this program will include speakers from Georgia and Illinois, a wreath laying, and 3,400 luminaries representing the lives lost during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.

Finally, a closing ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 29 at 5:00 p.m. featuring keynote speaker Rebecca Burns, author and lecturer on Southern and Atlanta history and Dr. Oral Moses and the Georgia Symphony Choir.

The Kennesaw Mountain Trail Club has partnered with the National Park Service to raise funds and recruit volunteers for the 150th Anniversary Commemoration.  The group has also created a special website for the event, where visitors can learn about events leading up to the commemoration, commemoration events, frequently asked questions, and how to support the 150th events.  More information on the group’s efforts can be found on www.battleofkennesawmountain150.com.   Dates, times, and events are listed under events on the website.
