First Friday Art Walk – October 3

Art_WalkFirst Friday Art Walk on the historic Marietta Square will be held on October 3, from 5-9 p.m., with over 30 artists showing their work in front of numerous merchants, restaurants and galleries hosting them.  This is the last Art Walk for this year.
In Atherton Square, behind Cool Beans and Hemmingways, Art Walk presents Tavern in the gARTen, selling beer and wine. Additional musicians and performing artists will be found throughout the Square, hosted by participating merchants.  Ask an Art Walk Ambassador for a map and directions.  You can identify them by their distinct white Art Walk aprons.
Kick-off your weekend with First Friday Art Walk. FRI OCT 3-NOV 21 PRESSING MATTERS V, 2 Rules Fine Art of Marietta is pleased to host Pressing Matters V, the 5th annual exhibition by the members of the Atlanta Printmakers Studio (APS). This fine art exhibition recognizes the quality and diversity of work being generated by APS members. The works shown will be original prints using hand-pulled printmaking processes. Opening reception and printmaking demonstrations on Friday, October 3, 5-9pm during Marietta’s First Friday Art Walk. The reception is free and open to the public. Bill-Oberst-Jr-Lewis-GrizzardTHU-SUN OCT 2-5 – LEWIS GRIZZARD SHOW – Actor Bill Oberst, Jr. has stepped into the late Lewis Grizzard’s shoes over 1,000 times in the last decade. Oberst’s portrayal of the Southern writer and humorist is a one-man show authorized by Grizzard’s family, which says it is the closest thing to seeing the late great spokesman of the south onstage again since Grizzard’s death at age 47. The show is presented in two acts and runs 90 minutes.  Tickets are available at the www.earlsmithstrand.org.

THUR OCT 9 – HOMECOMING PARADE AND BLOCK PARTY – The Parade starts at 6 PM; The Block Party starts at 7 PM; Everything is finished by 9 PM. The North Cobb High School family would love for the word to be spread and families from all over to attend. This is a wonderful family friendly event where kids of all ages are encouraged to come. There will be great music, food, crafts for the kids, face painting, inflatables, and a photo booth where people dressed up as Disney characters can take pictures with all of the kids.

Marietta’s 2014 FIRST FRIDAY Art Walk Returns in April

Street scene at First Friday Art Walk.With much anticipation, the Branding Project is pleased to announce the return of First Friday Art Walk beginning in April 4, 2014.

Resuming April 4, 2014, and running the first Friday of the month from April through October, art lovers, near and far, come to enjoy an evening stroll down the tree-lined streets of Historic Downtown Marietta during Art Walk.

First Friday Art Walk is creating an art community of excellence on the Historic Marietta Square. First Friday Art Walk is a free, self-guided tour featuring local artists, and their art at the many different historic theaters, galleries, museums, restaurants and boutiques. Artists who are interested in participating in the 2014 First Friday Art Walk are welcome to visit www.artwalkmarietta.com to download an application.

Tavern in the gARTen, a beer and wine garden was a hit last year and continues on this 7th Annual First Friday Art Walk season. During Tavern in the gARTen guests can purchase cold beverages, sit and enjoy live music, and watch art come alive in Atherton Square located behind Cool Beans and Hemmingways.

Parking is available on the Square, in the Mill Street lots and in the Cherokee Street Parking Deck (free in the evenings).  For detailed information about parking, visit our website,   www.artwalkmarietta.com.  Admission to the Art Walk is free.  First Friday Art Walk will be held rain or shine.

The Unwritten Lyrics, a solo exhibition of paintings by Heather Shirin,

Painting of Two Girls by Helen Shirin2 Rules Fine Art presents The Unwritten Lyrics, an exhibition of mixed media paintings by Asheville NC artist Heather Shirin. The show will run April 4 through May 30, with an opening reception on Friday, April 4th, from 5-9pm. An additional reception will be held on Friday, May 2nd, 5-9pm. Both receptions take place during Marietta’s First Friday Art Walks.

It’s not just their locale that makes Hurry and Radney a likely pair for an art show duo, it’s their canvases. Their canvases share textures, colors, and feelings that complement the other, as any interesting dialogue would…hence the show title, Dialogue. The Art Walk is a free, self-guided tour through Marietta’s diverse art scene. Art galleries, museums, cultural venues, restaurantsand boutiques host artists near their storefronts and are open 5:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.

Live music performances have been added to the event and can be found at the Tavern in the gARTen and other sidewalk locations throughout the Square. Maps of the venues areavailable at each participating merchant, the Marietta Visitors Bureau, at the Art Walk signsthroughout the Square, from the Art Walk Ambassadors and online.
The Tavern in the gARTen, a beer and wine garden is the newest feature of the 6th Annual First Friday Art Walk. At the Tavern in the gARTen, guests can purchase cold beverages,sit and enjoy live music, and watch art come alive in Atherton Square.

dk Galleries – All Creatures Great and Small

dk Gallery will feature the work of four artists for the month of October entitled All Creatures Great and Small:

everywhereSusan Easton Burns works will be displayed Gallery 1 as a solo show. Easton Burns’ work is best described as Abstract Expressionism, soulful and evocative. An animal lover who believes all creatures have a place, Burns acknowledges this in her work depicting her subjects with strength and dignity. Her paintings emerge guided by her strong intuition, a central theme in both her life and work. In 2014, Easton Burns’ talent will be recognized on a grand scale when she emerges as the official Kentucky Derby™ artist.

greatandsmallIn Gallery II a trio of local art talent will share the while walls.  Melissa Snyder, Maureen Engle and Claire Dunaway Cyr.  Claire teaches art at Ford Elementary school and is well known in the city of Marietta.  Claire writes, “If you are in the area, please feel free to drop by dk Gallery on the Marietta Square on Friday, October 4th between the hours of 5 and 9pm. This special show opening is in conjunction with Art Walk happening all around the Square… all the more reason to come out and enjoy the evening!”

She has participated in juried exhibits, and she has been accepted in major regional and national shows. Sesquicentennial of the Civil War: Local Art Local Lore
Leaves are falling, nights are cooling down and Starbucks has their Pumpkin Spice Latte available. What better way to celebrate the fall season than coming to the Marietta Museum of History for the First Friday Artwalk. The sesquicentennial of the Civil War is upon us, with that, the Marietta Museum of History will feature Glen Amos and Hubert Brown. These two Cobb County artists will be showcasing and selling their creations.

Glen Amos, a local furniture craftsman, is also a chainsaw artist. Hubert Brown is a folk artist who paints on canvas, bricks, shovels and other media. At Art Walk he will feature his paintings based on his grandmother’s memories of the Civil War.

Art Walk is a free self-guided tour of the Marietta Square’s eclectic art scene. Galleries, museums, cultural venues, restaurants and boutiques host artists within their businesses from 5pm to 9pm on the first Friday of every month, rain or shine. Look for an official Art Walk banner in the window to identify the participating venues.

Be sure to stop by Marietta Wine Market, the Marietta Trolley Company, the Earl Smith Strand Theatre or the Cobb-Marietta Museum of Art to register for your chance to win a “Hip to be Square”  $50 gift certificate redeemable at any participating merchant on the Square. Yarn Bomb at Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art

katie1SAT, JULY 6,  MCMA Yarn Bomb at Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art. The Museum will reveal their first outdoor, community art installation: the Yarn Bomb. The MCMA Yarn Bomb is made from donated knit and crotched materials, all sewn into large pieces that will cover the front of the MCMA building and various spots around the building. The Yarn Bomb will be on display at Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art from July 6 through mid-September, during MCMA’s Metro Montage XIII and Folk Art Visionaries Exhibitions, which both focus on community art. The Yarn Bomb will be on display from July 6 to the end of September 2013, including Labor Day weekend, when MCMA will host the Marietta ChalkFest.

FRI-SUN June 7-9, Dixie Yard Sale, Ringgold to Marietta, GA – The Dixie Highway Yard Sale is an annual event held on the first full weekend of June. Dixie Highway is 90 miles of yard sales with all sorts of different vendors. It was created in 2006 to celebrate historic communities along the Dixie Highway. Starting in Ringgold, GA and ending in Marietta, GA there is everything from antiques, souvenirs, and nik-naks to classic attractions, food, events and more.

SAT JUN  8 Memorial Program Will Celebrate the Life of Councilman Thrash. 11:00 AM.  In lieu of a funeral, Bill Thrash’s family and the Mayor and Council extend an invitation to a memorial service on Saturday, June 8 at 11 a.m. at Kennesaw Mountain High School.  This program will be followed by a picnic lunch at Swift-Cantrell Park.  The public is welcomed to attend and share their memories and stories of Councilman Thrash.

SAMSUNGSAT JUNE 8 10th Annual Soap Box Derby Race 8:30 AM.
The Marietta Soap Box Derby Race, sponsored by the Marietta Kiwanis Club, will be held June 8th in the parking lot at Marietta High School starting at 8:30 AM.  It’s a great outing for the family and admission is Free! Youth ages 7-17 years of age will come from all over North Georgia to Marietta to participate in the All American Soap Box Derby local qualifying.  They will race their Derby Cars down a 500-foot hill at speeds reaching 25-30 mph to earn the title of All American Soap Box Derby-Marietta Local Champion.  The winners of each division will also earn a spot to represent Cobb County and the State of Georgia in the Annual All American Soap Box Derby World Championship Race in Akron, Ohio in July 2013, where they will race against more than 500 local Champions from all over the world including Germany, China, Japan and Austria.  For more information go to www.mariettasoapboxderby.com.  Yes, and girls race too.

SAT JUNE 8 Daylily Show and Plant Sale 12:30 PM
The Greater Atlanta and Cobb County Daylily Societies will host the Ninth Annual Daylily Show and Plant Sale on Saturday June 8th at the Cobb Galleria Center.  More than 500 blooms of several hundred different cultivars will be on display for morning judging and afternoon viewing by the public.  At the same time, bareroot daylilies will be on sale at bargain prices, a great way to add these hardy plants to a garden.  Experts from both clubs will be on hand to share what they know and love.  The show and sale is free and open to the public from 12:30 to 4:00 PM.  

SAT June 8 – Cherokee Experiences During the Civil War 2:00 pm. The Kennesaw Historical Society and the Southern Museum are sponsoring a lecture entitled “Cherokee Experiences During the Civil War”, with Alice Taylor-Colbert, Ph.D. The program will start at 2:00, and will be in the Kennesaw Depot. It is free to the public. Parking is available behind the Museum if the Depot lot is full.

FRI MAY 3 – ART WITH HEART FUNDRAISER. This one-night event will be a lot of fun and they are hoping  to raise the $10,000 needed to fund the children’s programs. Each of the celebrity artists will have their paintings auctioned at the end of the evening along with art that has been donated. 12 of Marietta’s top leaders in the community will do live painting, and a jazz band, food and beverages add spice to the night. The fun starts at 5pm on Friday night May 3rd at Arts of Cobb, just off the Square. Live auction is at 7:30PM. It’s a free event and open to the public. This is the same evening as First Friday Art Walk – drop by and take a look. SAT MAY 4 Kennesaw Cemetery Clean-up Day.  The Kennesaw Cemetery Preservation Commission is hosting a clean-up and beautification day for Kennesaw’s historic cemetery on Saturday, May 4 from 10 am to 2 pm. The cemetery is located at Main and Cemetery Streets downtown.  Cleaning materials (except gloves) will be supplied.  Free lunch and drinks as well as live entertainment are also provided.  All are welcomed to come and participate.

SAT MAY 4 – LOVE A BUNCH ~ COME TO BRUNCH 10-Noon.  Sponsored by 10 Women of Hope.  The Brunch will be held at Zion Baptist Church, 165 Lemon St., Marietta.  Keynote speaker is Rona Roberts, PhD and author of “Greater Acts than These.  Wear your favorite “stylin’ shoes” Prizes to be awarded.  Tickets are $20 and available at the door.

SAT MAY 4 Aquafina Pitch, Hit, & Run Noon-2:00 pm The Acworth Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting the Aquafina Pitch, Hit, & Run competition on Saturday, May 4th from 12noon – 2:00 p.m. at the Acworth Sports Complex Field 3, located at 4000 S. Main Street in Acworth. This competition is a free skills competition that provides boys and girls, age 7 to 14, the opportunity to showcase their pitching, hitting, and running abilities. SAT, MAY 4 “Helicopter Day at Marietta Museum of History’s Aviation Wing” (10am-4pm) Located at the intersection of South Cobb Drive and Atlanta Road. The public is invited to see helicopters currently used by law enforcement, emergency medical services and the U.S. military in the metropolitan Atlanta area and learn about the various roles these aircraft play in saving lives and protecting our cities, counties, state and nation.

SAT, MAY 4 “Brumby Hall and Gardens Tour” (10am-4pm) at Brumby Hall and Gardens – 500 Powder Springs St.  The event is part of National Preservation Month in May. Brumby Hall and Gardens will be free during the tour, and docents will be on site if you have questions or want more information  about Brumby Hall or the gardens

SAT, MAY 4  “St. James Episcopal Church Cemetery Tour” (11am-4pm) at  St. James’ Episcopal Church Cemetery – 161 Church St.  The event is part of National Preservation Month in May. The St. James Episcopal Church Cemetery will be free during the tour, and docents will be on site if you have questions or want more information about the church or cemetery

SAT, MAY 4  “Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society Spring Garden Party” (4-8pm)Located at  Oakton – 581 Kennesaw Ave. The event is in honor of the 175th anniversary of Oakton House and is open to the public. Tickets Adults: $75 , Couples: $140,Families: $200.  The garden party will include a garden and barn tour, Civil War camp with reenactors, horse and carriage photo op, buffet and bar.

SAT MAY 4 PARADOCS at the Strand. Come enjoy great music on Saturday, May 4 at the Strand.  The concert starts at 8:00 pm. The PARADOCS are a group of Wellstar physicians, nurses and medical personnel who have formed a great 15 piece rock and roll band! And let me tell you they do rock and roll!! Children’s activities featuring both free and pay-to-play inflatables, giveaways and outdoor fun are offered beginning at 6 pm Parking is available inside the park, and at neighboring Kennesaw Elementary School. SAT, MAY 4 -5   “37th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival” (10am-6pm) In Glover Park on the Square  More than 100 local and area artists and craftspeople will display and sell their work at the 36th annual May-retta Daze Arts and Crafts Festival in Glover Park. Exhibitors include painting, pottery, woodwork, metal, jewelry, glass, fabric, floral designs, demonstrations and much more.  Admission is free, and free parking is available in the Cobb County parking garage, which can be accessed using the Waddell Street entrance. Handicapped parking is also available.

FRI MAY 3-SUN MAY 12 SHRINE CIRCUS The circus will be held Friday, May 3, through Sunday, May 12, 2013,  at Jim R. Miller Park, Callaway Rd., Marietta 30008.  Monday through Friday the Midway opens at 5 p.m.; Saturday at 10 a.m.; Sunday at Noon.  Best Deal in Town!
