Kennesaw’s Touch A Truck and other FAMILY events

Imagine a playground that allows families to get up-close and personal with big trucks, heavy construction and public safety equipment, cool cars and specialty vehicles… that’s Touch-A-Truck! Have a blast watching your kids touch levers, flip switches, and shift gears that make their favorite vehicles whir and rumble at this one-day-only “museum” of local transportation.

Admission is FREE. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
This is a FREE event and it will be held on Saturday, March 10 from 10-2 at the Depot in downtown Kennesaw (its on Cherokee St across from the museum).

SAT MAR 10 MARIETTA TREE KEEPERS PLANTING Marietta Tree Keepers invites volunteers of all ages to help plant trees in the Marietta City Cemetery on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 9:00am. Tools and refreshments provided. Dress for outdoor weather.We will be planting trees in the Marietta City Cemetery. The parking address is: Brown Park, 358 West Atlanta St., Marietta, 30064, look for the green signage. You can also drive into the middle of the cemetery and look for our sign-in table at the small white building. The date is Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 9:00am.

SAT MAR 10 SHREDDING EVENT 9-12. On Saturday, March 10, 2018, the City of Marietta and Keep Marietta Beautiful will hold a shredding event from 9am-12pm at 591 North Marietta Pkwy NE, Marietta, GA 30060. While the event is free, donations are greatly appreciated. If you have confidential or sensitive documents that need to be safely discarded, Keep Marietta Beautiful will shred will allow you to watch your documents as they are shredded on site. Paper items only will be accepted.

Jones served as President of the Kennesaw Historical Society for 21 years (1994-2015), and also served as a member of the executive board of the Kennesaw Museum Foundation for 17 years (1998-2015).

Acworth’s Back to School Family Movie Night

gooniesThe City of Acworth along the Acworth Business Association will be holding a FREE “Back to School Family Movie Night” on Friday, July 31.  Come out to the football fields at the Acworth Sports Complex after a long week and watch The Goonies.  This classic from 1985 sends a group of misfits on a journey to find a pirate’s ancient treasure to save their home from foreclosure.

The gates will open at 7:00 p.m. and the movie will begin at dark.  So bring out your lawn chairs, a blanket and cooler…a great night is guaranteed!  Concessions will be available.

KSU to Host Free Career Training Expo April 2

Lyn CohenKSU’s College of Continuing and Professional Education will host a Career Training Expo on April 2, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The free event will provide individuals the opportunity to sharpen their competitive edge by learning from several information sessions covering multiple industries.

“This is another example of our commitment to those who desire to make a change to enhance their personal and professional growth,” said Barbara Calhoun, dean of the College. The Expo will spotlight more than 50 professional certificate programs, allowing attendees to meet instructors and recent graduates at the information sessions. Highlighted programs include, Payroll, Culinary, Information Systems Security, Medical Assisting, Paralegal, Lean Six Sigma, Project Management and Web Design.

As a special incentive, all attendees will receive a 10% discount coupon valid through April 9. However, those who register on-site will receive a student gift pack. There will also be an opportunity to enter and win an iPad mini.

John LongCareer coach John Long returns to lead sessions on job interviewing and professional branding.  He brings more than a decade of experience and a wealth of relevant knowledge to his presentations.

Kennesaw’s Free Book, CD & DVD Swap

BookCDDVDSwap1Drop off your gently used hardcover or paperback books, music CDs and DVD movies at the Ben Robertson Community Center on Thursday and Friday, January 9-10 from noon to 8 pm and receive a ticket redeemable for the same number of items during “open swap” time on Saturday, January 11 from 8-11 am.

Books must have their front and back covers intact and be in good condition. CDs and DVDs must be in their original cases and fully operable. Magazines, software, record albums, VHS or cassette tapes, adult content, unauthorized or illegal material will not be accepted. After the event, all unclaimed items will be donated to charitable organizations.

This is not a book sale. It is a FREE media swap. Items will not be available for purchase. Assistance is needed during the event with receiving, sorting, counting and bagging items. Volunteers must have the ability to bend, stoop, stand and lift up to 20lbs.

Taste of Acworth – October 12.

TOA1The 9th Annual Taste of Acworth will take place in the Historic District on Main Street, Saturday, October 12 from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.  The Acworth Business Association and the City of Acworth sponsor this popular event every year that benefits numerous local schools and charities in our community.  Approximately 20,000 visitors tasted their way through this collection of delicacies last year.

The event will host 150 booths from local restaurants and businesses demonstrating what they do best.  There will be a live entertainment stage providing live music and demonstrations from local talent throughout the day.  The infamous dog show is back again this year as well as the always popular fashion show.  Children will have plenty to do with inflatables, quad bungee, and challenging games located in the kid zone.

Admission is FREE!  An array of diverse restaurants will be offering food samples from $1.00 to $4.00 to satisfy every palate.  Parking will be available throughout town. Come hungry, bring the kids, bring the pooch, and join in the fun!

Photohike at Red Top Mountain

photographerPhotographers of all skill levels are invited to join the Friends of Red Top Mountain on a hike around the Lakeside Trail. Hone your photography skills as you enjoy good company and beautiful scenery. Meet in the Discovery Room at the Park Office on Saturday June 29.  The two hour hike starts at 9:00, so be at the office a few minutes before.

While the hike is FREE. All vehicles must display an annual or $5 daily ParkPass.

Pirates, Splashtown Coming to Kennesaw’s Swift-Cantrell Park

SplashtownThe City of Kennesaw is serving up a double feature of summer entertainment on Saturday, June 1 with water-themed activities followed by the second free outdoor movie in the summer series at Swift-Cantrell Park.

The excitement begins at 6 p.m., as the sun-soaked “shores” of the park become a watery playground of splishing, splashing, slipping and sliding fun. Activities will feature both free and pay-to-play inflatable slides, field games and attractions. After the sun goes down, set sail for a fun-filled pirate adventure with a screening of The Pirates! Band of Misfits. The 2012 stop-motion animated adventure comedy follows the Pirate Captain and his crew of amateur pirates as they attempt to win the Pirate of the Year competition. The movie is rated PG, and features the voices of Hugh Grant and Jeremy Piven.

Movie goers are invited to bring a blanket or low-back chairs. Pop-up tents, canopies or beach umbrellas that can obstruct the view of others are not permitted. Concessions will be available for purchase.

Children participating in water activities should arrive dressed to get wet. An extra change of clothing, towel and dry shoes is recommended. Restrooms will be available; showers and changing rooms are not.

Swift-Cantrell Park is located at 3140 Old 41 Highway.  Parking is available inside the park and at neighboring Kennesaw Elementary School. Cancellations may occur due to weather conditions.
