Go Skateboarding Day – June 21

goskateposter1Kennesaw Parks & Recreation and Ambush Board Company are partnering to host Go Skateboarding Day on Sunday, June 21 from noon to 4 pm at Kennesaw Skatepark.

Local rippers, veteran shredders, and spectators are invited to help celebrate the official holiday of skateboarding, Go Skateboarding Day, held every year on June 21. The free, public event this Sunday from 12 – 4 pm at Kennesaw Skatepark will feature open skate sessions, contests with cool prizes, giveaways, games, music, and food vending. Winners of a father-son and father-daughter best trick contest will be awarded a pair of $50 Ambush gift cards and two skateboard decks; and winners of the best trick contest on the skatepark’s impact section will receive a $100 Ambush gift card and skateboard deck. Pre-registration is not required to enter the contests.

ART-Barks and Purrs- June 21

kidsCobb Animal Control staff will host its third annual ART-Barks and Purrs 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, June 21. This is part of continuing efforts to find homes for the homeless animals of Cobb County. The festival is designed to bring people to the shelter via an exciting event.

Staff and volunteers, along with local rescue groups, all work together to get the animals in new homes. At the event, more than 30 local arts and crafts vendors that have animal related art will be on hand. The free, fun and family-friendly festival will be held at the shelter, 1060 Al Bishop Drive, Marietta, and include great raffle prizes, special adoption rates and food. Participants are encouraged to bring an unexpired and unopened dog or cat food donation to help the community.

Celebrate Go Skateboarding Day

Jake Wootin catching air!Join fellow skateboard enthusiasts at Kennesaw Skatepark on Saturday, June 21, from 11 am to 4 pm  at an event in recognition of the tenth anniversary of Go Skateboarding Day. The free event will feature open skate sessions, live music, “best trick” contests, giveaways, game tables, and a misting station. BBQ and frozen treats will be available for purchase. Kennesaw Skatepark is located at Swift-Cantrell Park, Kennesaw.

Contest start times are as follows: 1 p.m. – Impact Section, 2 p.m. – Centerpiece Gap, and 3 p.m. – Pool. Winners will receive a gift card; runner-ups will receive a skate deck. Advance registration is not required.

Go Skateboarding Day, held on June 21 every year, is the official holiday of skateboarding. Founded by the International Association of Skateboard Companies, Go Skateboarding Day gives passionate skateboarders as well as those who are simply inspired by the sport the opportunity to drop everything and get on a skateboard. It is a cooperative of decentralized events that take place around the globe. Skateboard retailers, manufacturers, skateparks, distributors, organizations and individuals of all colors, creeds, and attitudes hold events to celebrate the holiday.

The Longest Day® Fundraiser for Alzheimer’s awareness

communityThe Ruff ‘N Sluff, Marietta’s local bridge club, is participating on June 21, 2013 in The Longest Day®, an annual fundraiser to raise awareness and funds for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.
“Almost everyone has been touched by Alzheimer’s,” says Priscilla Smith, owner of the Ruff ‘N Sluff and long-time American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) director. “It’s a terrible disease and our club wanted to help support the efforts of the  in any way we could.”
The day will begin at 6:30 a.m. with Breakfast and Bridge, and throughout the day, fun activities including lessons, will be held. There will be games for every level of player, free food, and for ACBL players, double points! The last game is scheduled to end at 10:30 p.m.
“I’m hoping that even those who don’t play bridge will get involved,” says Smith. “Come for a free lesson, kibitz a friend, or just stop by to make a donation in honor of a loved one.”

Family Fun Safety Day

Safety Village event will be fun time for the whole family
Families are invited to enjoy an entertaining and educational event during Family Fun Safety Day 9 a.m.-noon, Friday, June 21, at the Cobb Safety Village. Activities will include a tour of Sparky’s House, water safety games, free fingerprinting kits and up close views of emergency vehicles.
Participating agencies include Cobb Animal Control, Cobb 911, Cobb Fire and Emergency Services, Cobb Police Department, Safe Kids Cobb County, SafePath Children’s Advocacy Center and WellStar Health Systems. The cost is $5 per person, with a $20 max per family. For group rates of 20 or more, please call 770-852-3270. There will be refreshments compliments of Harry’s Famer’s Market.
