First Friday Art Walk – October 3

Art_WalkFirst Friday Art Walk on the historic Marietta Square will be held on October 3, from 5-9 p.m., with over 30 artists showing their work in front of numerous merchants, restaurants and galleries hosting them.  This is the last Art Walk for this year.
In Atherton Square, behind Cool Beans and Hemmingways, Art Walk presents Tavern in the gARTen, selling beer and wine. Additional musicians and performing artists will be found throughout the Square, hosted by participating merchants.  Ask an Art Walk Ambassador for a map and directions.  You can identify them by their distinct white Art Walk aprons.
Kick-off your weekend with First Friday Art Walk. FRI OCT 3-NOV 21 PRESSING MATTERS V, 2 Rules Fine Art of Marietta is pleased to host Pressing Matters V, the 5th annual exhibition by the members of the Atlanta Printmakers Studio (APS). This fine art exhibition recognizes the quality and diversity of work being generated by APS members. The works shown will be original prints using hand-pulled printmaking processes. Opening reception and printmaking demonstrations on Friday, October 3, 5-9pm during Marietta’s First Friday Art Walk. The reception is free and open to the public. FRI OCT 3 POP/REALISM PAINTINGS Avery Gallery presents Pop/Realism Paintings by Clifford Land.  This entertaining show opens on Friday, October 3 from 5 – 9 pm at Avery Gallery, 390 Roswell St. in Marietta. Mick Kinney & The Georgia Crackers will be playing live 1920’s era Appalachian mountain music with string instruments; fiddle, banjo and guitar.   GG’s Creole Cuisine will be providing an excellent sampling of delicious creole food.

Art Walk Celebrates Last First Friday on October 4th

_MG_1846-cropped-brighterMarietta Square is the site of the last First Friday Art Walk of the 2013 season on Friday, October 4 . “The best thing about this event is that we offer art experiences for everyone from new artists just starting out, as well as award-winners. The community can come out andenjoy work by visual artists, performing artists and the beautiful backdrop for it all is theHistoric Marietta Square where our community comes together.” said Donna Krueger, owner of dk Gallery on the MariettaSquare.

The Art Walk is a free, self-guided tour through Marietta’s diverse art scene. Art galleries, museums, cultural venues, restaurantsand boutiques host artists near their storefronts and are open 5:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.

Live music performances have been added to the event and can be found at the Tavern in the gARTen and other sidewalk locations throughout the Square. Maps of the venues areavailable at each participating merchant, the Marietta Visitors Bureau, at the Art Walk signsthroughout the Square, from the Art Walk Ambassadors and online.
The Tavern in the gARTen, a beer and wine garden is the newest feature of the 6th Annual First Friday Art Walk. At the Tavern in the gARTen, guests can purchase cold beverages,sit and enjoy live music, and watch art come alive in Atherton Square.

dk Galleries – All Creatures Great and Small

dk Gallery will feature the work of four artists for the month of October entitled All Creatures Great and Small:

everywhereSusan Easton Burns works will be displayed Gallery 1 as a solo show. Easton Burns’ work is best described as Abstract Expressionism, soulful and evocative. An animal lover who believes all creatures have a place, Burns acknowledges this in her work depicting her subjects with strength and dignity. Her paintings emerge guided by her strong intuition, a central theme in both her life and work. In 2014, Easton Burns’ talent will be recognized on a grand scale when she emerges as the official Kentucky Derby™ artist.

greatandsmallIn Gallery II a trio of local art talent will share the while walls.  Melissa Snyder, Maureen Engle and Claire Dunaway Cyr.  Claire teaches art at Ford Elementary school and is well known in the city of Marietta.  Claire writes, “If you are in the area, please feel free to drop by dk Gallery on the Marietta Square on Friday, October 4th between the hours of 5 and 9pm. This special show opening is in conjunction with Art Walk happening all around the Square… all the more reason to come out and enjoy the evening!”

Avery Gallery presents the Raku Pottery of Ann Wallin.

rakuartistAvery Gallery’s Exhibition opens Friday, October 4.  Over the years, Ann has won many awards. She has participated in juried exhibits, and she has been accepted in major regional and national shows. Meet and talk to Ann Wallin.  Learn about her style and process for making raku pottery.  5 to 9 pm, Friday, October 4 at Avery Gallery.  A delicious taste of GG’s Creole Cuisine will be served and liquid refreshments will be available.  Parking is free in our parking lot next to our building and next door in front of Cobb Hardware, after 6 pm.  There is also a church across Olive Street that has plenty of parking within an easy walk. Sesquicentennial of the Civil War: Local Art Local Lore
Leaves are falling, nights are cooling down and Starbucks has their Pumpkin Spice Latte available. What better way to celebrate the fall season than coming to the Marietta Museum of History for the First Friday Artwalk. The sesquicentennial of the Civil War is upon us, with that, the Marietta Museum of History will feature Glen Amos and Hubert Brown. These two Cobb County artists will be showcasing and selling their creations.

Glen Amos, a local furniture craftsman, is also a chainsaw artist. Hubert Brown is a folk artist who paints on canvas, bricks, shovels and other media. At Art Walk he will feature his paintings based on his grandmother’s memories of the Civil War.

Mothers and Magnolias Tea

Rich’s department store was THE department store of it’s time. As some remember, it was the place where women would go to socialize. There was food, a fashion show and an excuse to dress up in finery.

The Marietta Museum of History is recreating the famous Magnolia Room for a Mother’s Day tea and luncheon. There will be original Magnolia Room recipes and the event will be highlighted by a fashion show led by Carol Westbrook. A former fashion assistant in the early 1970’s at Rich’s Fashion & Fabric office and current owner of The Magnolia Room Antiques Market in Marietta.

The event will also feature Rich’s historian and author of Rich’s: A Southern Institution, Jeff Clemmons. Clemmons will ignite your imagination with stories and history on the Atlanta hot spot where Georgia ladies went to see and be seen!
Dress as they did in your finest pearls, hats and gloves and join us for an afternoon of honoring mothers and of remembering when…. WED APR 10 MARIETTA COUNCIL OF GARDENS 9:30 am.The Marietta Council of Garden Clubs invites you to their monthly meetings. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced gardener looking to get involved in community projects, all are welcome. . Come and socialize and listen to this month’s program on  ‘Introduction to Ikebana’.  The speaker is Donna Scott, a Certified Instructor from the Ichiyo School of Ikebana.  The meeting also informs you on what the garden clubs are doing in the Marietta area. Meet at Hill Pocket Park, 144 Lemon Street, Marietta, GA 30060 (corner of Lemon Street and Waddell St. behind the Bank of America on Cherokee St.) The event begins at 8:30am with sign-in and refreshments and we will plant trees from 9:00-11am.  Large groups please call ahead and let us know how many volunteers are attending. SAT APR 13 Life of the Common Soldier in the Civil War.  The Kennesaw Historical Society and the Southern Museum are sponsoring a lecture entitled “Life of the Common Soldier in the Civil War”, with David Chastain.  The program will start at 2:00, and will be in the Kennesaw Depot. It is free to the public. Parking is available behind the Museum if the Depot lot is full.

SAT APR 13 Marietta Square Artists Market: Where All the Arts Come Alive! The Marietta Square Artists Market is excited to begin its 3rd annual market season, opening April 13th, 2013.    The Artists Market is a juried, open-air market located on Mill Street between Church Street and the railroad tracks, Open every 2nd and 4th Saturday from April to November, 9:00am to 2:00pm, rain or shine. All fine artists are encouraged to apply!
